Sometimes it is woven on silk on silk or silk on cotton and wool with cotton. Cotton is used for providing strength to the carpet. Hand-knotted carpet contains knots which are the collection of piles and piles made using warp and weft. The weft of a carpet is in either wool or silk and warp is in cotton or silk. There are many types of carpet available in the market like modern carpet, hand-knotted rug, hand-tufted carpet, flat-woven dhurries. Some carpet contains fringes and some without fringes. There are some people who want to know that what is the role of fringes or tassels and what is more better. Find the below tips-
What are the fringes:
On hand-knotted and hand-woven carpets, the fringes and tassels are the warps of the rug. These are the strands that wool (or silk) pile knots are twisted and tied around to create that rug. It is the foundation of that rug.
With fringes: -
Fringes is the combination of warp. If you don’t like carpet fringes and take scissors to cut those, the rug will come apart. By hiding the fringe you get the same look you want but without fringes, structural it will be damaged. If wrapping the edges is not an option because fringes or tassels are very long, you can just fold the tassels behind the rug and cover them with the material like cotton cloth. You want to add decorative tassels then it is also possible in hand-knotted carpets. You can add Pom-Pom or can bind it in different styles. It will add charm to your carpet. Pom-Pom is a famous tassel for durries. People like to add a pom-pom to flat-woven durries.
Without fringes:
In this carpet, the warp is bind and stitched with carpet or sometimes weavers use secondary cloths for providing the strength to a carpet. This is mostly used for hand-tufted carpet because it is handmade but does not contain piles and knots. This is woven using a needle with material yarn and a gun. Weavers insert wool into the cloth using a gun. If you want to use a traditional carpet without fringes then you can stretch it in inside. You can also cut and make it small.
Traditional rugs are better with fringes and modern rugs without fringes:
If you want to decorate your home in a traditional theme then you can select a handmade carpet which contains vibrant multi colors with small and tiny floral motifs. You can select area rug from a traditional carpet. If you want to choose a full traditional carpet then hand-knotted silk carpet is best because silk carpets contain the most intricate design in 15-35 colors.
If you want to shop a traditional rug then take a carpet with fringes because it is more durable. Use a modern carpet without fringes for giving a contemporary look to your décor.
