Choosing a Rug That Fits the Furniture You Already Have

A well placed, a well-selected rug can make or break the what you want to portray in any living space. It is important that when you spend time in a room, you feel comfortable and relaxed.

Along with this line, the material, color, as well as the style and size of the rug you select makes a direct impact on the way you feel in the space as a whole. However, because quality rugs are certainly not cheap, it becomes increasingly anxiety-inducing to choose one that fits what you want. To help you out a bit, here is a short list of tips that can aid your decision making:

1. Material

There are numerous options when it comes to the material your rug is actually made of. One key element of every material is softness. Softness is pretty subjective, and some prefer softer or firmer makes rugs, so trust your bare feet!

But the other aspect that many do not consider is durability. You need to make sure that the money you’re spending won’t go to waste when the rug is damaged over time. Wool is a quick and easy material to choose because wool is both very soft and very sustainable. Wool will also be easier than many materials to clean.

2. Color

Color is very important in contributing to the mood you want to create. Of course, you want to match the general hue of your rug to that of the furniture in the room. Additionally, you will also want to make sure you use the right tone of the color you select to promote the right feel.

Using a bright shade/tone with a room that you wish to promote energy and activity, such as the kitchen or dining area, should be considered. In contrast, use muted or paler tones to give off an aura of serenity and relaxation in a reading room or living room.

3. Style

The style of your new rug is perhaps most dependent on the style of the furniture you already have in the room. What you’re really aiming for in this department is a style or pattern that complements the furniture. In this sense, it is definitely a good idea to try to contrast the pattern of the rug with the dominant pattern of the furniture. So, if your furniture has a lot going on in its pattern, it’s a good idea to use a solid pattern and color to compliment it. In contrast, going abstract or oriental with your rug-style will be a great way to compliment solid patterned sofas and chairs.

4. Size

Choosing the right size for your rug is reliant on the purpose of the room you wish to use it in. For example, in a dining area, you will want to get a rug that extends to about two or three feet outside of the chairs so that they are able to slide in and out without catching the edge.

In a living room or sitting room, you want to have a rug all the furniture can sit on, but that does not extend too far outside of that space. The main thing remember, is that it is usually safer to go a bit bigger rather than smaller if you need to make a guess. Rugs that are too small just look awkward.

Handmade Carpet

As with any carpet, aesthetic features are very important, but they can rapidly deteriorate if you do not take care of them, especially when spills occur. When an enjoyable snack spills and leaves a mark adding water and blotting it first is the best way to proceed. From there, vacuum the area, moving the nozzle back and forth while adding little doses of water. Check every now and then to trim loose or fraying threads in the rug, and check under the rug a few times a year to check for mold or mildew.

So, you now have a basis on which to base your decision-making process for your new rug! Remember that when all is said and done, only you can choose your perfect rug. Make your home feel like your home, and you cannot go wrong!
