Five Ways to Maximize Interior Lighting While Minimizing Costs

Saving money and cutting down on monthly spending is something everyone can do. There are many ways that you can accomplish this, and one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways is to maximize the interior lighting that you’re using.

Maximizing the interior lighting means making the most of what you have to increase efficiency. It doesn’t necessarily mean having to spend more money. There are plenty of simple changes you can make which can go a long way towards ensuring that you’re minimizing the costs.

We’ve included below five different useful saving tips that you can try which will maximize the interior lighting in your house and lessen your power consumption.

The benefits of doing these steps include a better-looking interior, more efficient design, lower electric bills, and more efficient use of light to improve the ambiance and overall appearance.

Less Is More:

Consider using a larger light source such as a lantern or oversized pendant rather than multiple smaller lamps. Proper placement is the key to creating a centralized focal point to the room. This will also save you on electric bills as you can just use a LED lantern or energy saving bulb.

Install A Dimmer:

Light Bulbs

A dimmer is a device used to adjust the brightness of a light. The upsides to having one installed are that you can reduce the light (and thereby energy consumption) for a particular room/s. It also creates a soothing atmosphere for your eyes if bright lights easily irritate you. It also has higher efficiency because it is built with semiconductors instead of variable resistors.

Upgrade Your Light Bulbs:

If you’re still using incandescent lights in any part of the house, consider upgrading all of them to either CFLs or LED lights.

Incandescent light bulbs are the first iteration of the light bulb invented. And since the light production method is by heating a metallic filament, it makes the bulb very hot and uses a lot of electricity.

CFLs (Compact Fluorescent Lamps) have almost completely replaced incandescent lights in most households as of 2014 and are the next best choice in the evolution of the light bulb. They produce light by emitting ultraviolet light and converting it to visible light with a special coating on the inside of the bulb. These are the bulbs you've seen with the arches or a helical design.

LED (Light-Emitting Diode) lights are the most expensive up-front but also save the most energy. They can use up to 10 watts at the minimum. This type of lamp has many small diodes which emit light when electrically stimulated.

Upgrading your bulbs will increase interior lighting and lower your electric bill.

Use Candles:

Using candles at dinner or parties is a great way to conserve energy and provide a natural, soothing, and atmospheric light.

Maintain Your Windows:

One of the easiest and cheapest methods you can employ is to simply keep your windows clean. Dust and dirt can often obscure a window’s natural light, reducing the effectivity and forcing you to use interior lights more often.

Also, consider upgrading your windows altogether if the style is outdated and is not conducive to natural light entry. As a plus, you’ll also get some good airflow going on as well.

Use Reflective Surfaces:

Here’s a trick that many interior designers are familiar with. By scattering multiple objects like handmade woolen area rug with reflective surfaces around the inside of your home, you can increase the amount of light that enters by simply amplifying the light source.

Reflective surfaces you can use to do this are mirrors, metallic surfaces, glass, and anything shiny. This trick successfully accomplishes both goals because the cost is quite minor while the amount of light increased inside is substantial.
