Difference between a handmade rug and a flat woven dhurrie

Handmade carpets and rugs are often used for decorating a home. Most of the people confuse handmade durries with handmade carpets because both are used for decorating floors. Decorating a home floor is a very difficult task. You cannot change your floor every year or within 5 years. So use a handmade carpet or dhurrie in order to protect your expensive floor tiles. Handmade dhurrie and handmade carpet, both are used for enhancing the beauty of space but there are few differences which I am going to tell you-

Weaving Process:

As we know that handmade carpets and dhurries are made in three categories. Handmade carpets are made in two types- first one is hand-knotted and the second one is a hand-tufted rug. Handmade dhurrie is woven in flat-woven technique. These carpets and dhurries are made on a handloom but the constructions of looms are different from each other. Handknotted rug is woven in double weft and hand-tufted carpet is called as cut-pile carpet and flatwoven dhurrie does not contain knots and piles and that’s why it is very thin. Carpets are woven down to up process and dhurries are woven flat loom. Dhurrie has no pile but carpet has pile. Carpets are hand tufted and hand knotted but durries are hand-woven. Durries are reversible because these have no backing support. You can use carpets only from one side. Durries are woven by interweaving the weft and warp. Hand woven flat durries are made on a smaller medium-sized weaving loom. With weft fingers, the weaver picks up a specified number of threads on the wrap and insert the colored yarn that forms the weft, hit it down in the palace with the help of a panja or heavy, multipronged metal fork.

Difference in thicknesses:

Handmade dhurries are woven in single weft and that’s why it is thin as compared to a handmade carpet. It is easily will fit under door also. On the other hand, a handmade carpet is thicker than a dhurrie and are not flat woven.

Difference in materials:

Handmade carpets are made in pure natural materials like pure New Zealand wool, cotton, and pure silk material. Handmade dhurries are made in 20ply by 20 count cotton and finest quality of wool, jute, banana silk materials.

Difference in prices:

Handmade dhurries take less effort and time to make and that’s why it is cheaper than handmade carpets. A handmade rug takes many months to weave and the weaving duration depends on the size of carpet, material, design and color combinations.

Weaving Process time:

Handmade flat-woven dhurries take maximum 2-3 months to weave and it depends on the color combination, design and the size of dhurrie. A hand-knotted carpet takes many months to weave. It also depends on the same factor- size, color, and design. So, if you want to customize a dhurrie or handmade carpet then before ordering, consider your time. If you have enough time then place an order for handmade rug and if you don’t have much time then place an order for flat-woven dhurrie
